That's sad news indeed. A very nice, and downright bloody clever, bloke.

Very sad.

I don't suppose the truth will ever emerge now regarding the argument between him and Charles Morgan over the Aero 8 design.

With Norman Dewis gone last month, Jim Randle could have been the last of the great pre-Ford Jag engineers and designers.

Definitely feels like the end of an era - Just like Alvis engineers, Jaguar engineers were different.

Also from DTW, a fine tribute from Randle fils:

https://driventowrite.com/2019/07/15/jim-randle-1938-2019-tribute-recollections-steve-randle/

I'm amazed that the life and achievements of such a widely known and well regarded figure have had no recognition, not only in the national press, but also in the automotive media.

These days the obituarists are preoccupied with inexplicably famous mountebanks, arts and culture ponces, and political pygmies.

It was the same when Spen King - Randle's one time boss - died. Too little, too late.

British managers, engineers, and designers continue to make a huge contribution to the global automotive industry, but to the UK's vacuous self-fixated mass media they might as well not exist.

Not even a page on Wikipedia for him, bonkers.

That the XJ40 turned out to be half as good as it was is a testament to Jim Randle. Sheer determination coupled with a similar level of talent meant the XJ40 punched well above the weight of a company with seriously limited funds to compete against the best in the world.
It was also in no small part due to him that Ford became involved in Jaguar and pumped in investment at a time when the company could have easily gone down a less fortunate path.

RIP Jim Randle.

Thought he'd at least turn up in the 'Recent Deaths' section. What a travesty.
It just goes to show that no matter how good you are at your chosen profession, being TLAC is an affliction that permeates every layer of the cake.
