Except that home is now a dreary looking office block in Stuttgart:

https://www.borgward.com/reaching-the-finish-line-of-the-borgward-grand-tour/

The caper involved a six BX7TSs driving from the factory in the Miyun district of Beijing to the Borgward headquarters in Stuttgart in four weeks across two continents with no problems

The route took in Beijing, Ulaanbaatar, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk, Moscow, Warsaw, Budapest, Vienna, and Stuttgart, to mark the launch of the the "premiere model" BX7 TS in Germany at a bargain* 44,200 Euros.

After successfully completing the marathon, the participants took advantage of the opportunity to make a “victory lap” from Stuttgart to Bremen via Heidelberg and Cologne. Bremen is the cradle of the Borgward culture (It says here).

All quiet on the new factory at Bremen GVZ. Things have not gone as smoothly as had been anticipated and the Bremen State authorities are expressing concern of the time it is taking for the company to take up an option on an area of land, which has been reserved for the purpose. The authorities claim to have other parties interested in occupation.

Aye, before Ghoul Borgward steals all the distribution depots' and shopping malls' workers with higher wages.

They're supposed to be available in UK and Oireland from 2020, so we'll see...

I understand that they sold all 100 of the 'limited editions' in Germany, but I don't know of any further sales. Given how revered is the Borgward name over there, that tells you a lot.

I suppose it works on the premise that if there are 195 countries in the world and they sell 100 in each, that's 19,050 cars. Wow.

Even the Chinese aren't fooled, it seems - ~3,000 per month is a bit below projections. No wonder Becky Photon in trying to flog 67% of it.

I can’t deny my thrill at the prospect of the red and white rhombus appearing on Subaru / Isuzu dealership facias sooner than expected, but the successors to Metcalfe and Mundy have a challenge ahead.

The story that Ghoul Borgward is returning to the UK and Ireland, appeared in Autoca* last week and has yet to be backed up by press releases from Borgward AG. or their by way of a "strategic partners", IM Group, the West Midlands-based business services conglomerate.

International Motors grew from a parts and servicing operation formed in 1976 in the Jensen Motors works in West Bromwich, battening on the Hyundai, Subaru, and Isuzu concessions in the 1980s. Once they also held the Maserati and De Tomaso franchises too, but now the IM Group makes more of their interests in corporate finance, property, and management consultancy than their automotive activities.

As an importer, their glory days were in the 1990s, when the Isuzu Trooper outsold the Mitsubishi Shogun in the UK, and the IMPREZA! appeared almost monthly on the cover of every UK general interest motoring comic.

For much of this century IM’s car importing operations have been blighted by unfavourable currency headwinds. Daihatsu was scuttled in 2011, and Subaru and Ssangyong sales in the UK in 2017 were 2679 and 3590 respectively. These are pretty appalling figures - this year Ghoul MG could well manage one and a half times their number with a two model range.

Quite whether a three-row petrol-only Audi A5 clone that’s been around in China for nearly three years is the fillip IM need is open to question.

Autoca* notes that the BX6, a coupe-SUV derivative of the entry level BX5 is being readied for the RHD South African market. At the right price it may make some progress in the UK. I’m using the similarly sized MG ZS as my bellwether here. It starts off at £13K in the UK, and could well outsell Subaru or Ssangyong on its own – MG Motor UK look set to double their 2017 figure of 4442 vehicles this year.

Once IM was an effective springboard for manufacturers entering the UK market but not able or willing to do it on their own. Their recent record gives less confidence, but the reality is that the market is now far more challenging, with badge-mania, production overcapacity, and PCP-based financing making it hard for unknown newcomers to gain traction.

Pricing is going to matter too. The €44,200 price of the BX7 TS Limited Edition in Germany converts to £39,500 in Sterling and applying the higher UK VAT rate. So much for “affordable premium”. That money should get you into a 4WD Q5, X3, or XC60. If three rows of seats matter, VAG will sell you a high-spec Kodiaq or Tarraco, and you can still expect to have the price of a damn good holiday left over from the BX7’s list price.

As Nick notes, Borgward AG must be getting something right, as the fully loaded BX7 TS Limited Edition is already sold out. Fret not – they’ll sell you a regular BX7 TS for the same €44,200.

Despite the promising* start, I detect an impermanence to Borgward’s “home market” sales model. No dealers, that’s so last century. Instead there will be “test drive centres”, mobile sales teams, pop-up events and delivery direct to the customer. Servicing is provided by Auto-Teile-Unger, a parts and servicing business with 557 branches across Germany.

Have Borgward AG been looking at what Daewoo UK did in the 1995? I can only wish them better luck.

Great Wall also amounted to nothing under IM Group. To start with there was talk of a whole range of Great Wall products. Instead we only got the Steed and I think now even that has disappeared.

IM began imports of the Steed in 2011, with the intention of following it with the Haval SUV as a sort of half price rival to the RAV4 and CRV.

The Haval never came over, and the pick-up sales failed to meet expectations and effectively ended in 2016. Probably killed off by Euro 6. There's still a Great Wall page on the IM website:

I balme the Wingle.

I think I have seen one Great Wall Wingle on the roads. I bet the guy got some stick when he turned up on site with that.

Bao wo is I believe using a dealer chain in the Low Countries, as opposed to online retailing.

They do have a bit of a problem in Germany, as their equivalent of Kwik Shit cannot fix the inevitable problems and the car has to go back to Stuttgart to be sorted. Where it seems, it gets sorted. So no difference from the old days, then.

With the other Germans getting increasingly ugly/overstyled, there might be a market for a blander Audi-alike. But among modern executive-car renters the name will be a problem. It's unpronounceable outside of central Europe, most will have never have heard of it and the keys (it doesn't even have the Bremen Key on the fob) mean nothing on the bar.

They could probably change perceptions if they could get the BXi7 and Elektrobella on the market soon enough, if they don't run out of money first.

The last shit brand to make it to mainstream acceptability was perhaps Hyundai. That took the best part of 40 years. But like Audi before it, things were different back then.

From the Weser-Kurier, a Glasauge moment:

And there's more - a short history of Bremen's glorious* commercial and industrial failures, including the Bremer-Landesbank which played its part in CFWB's downfall:

Seems Carl's old party is stabbing Ghoul Borgward in the back:

https://www.weser-kurier.de/bremen/bremen-wirtschaft_artikel,-kritik-an-borgwardplaenen-_arid,1792896.html

Weser-Kurier wrote:
Criticism of Borgward plans

Stefan Lakeband 18.12.2018

The Bremen CDU has criticised the handling of the case of Borgward in the Senate. The Senator for Economic Affairs had prematurely popped the champagne corks with a view to the siting of Borgward.

At the end of the year, Bremen Economic Development has cancelled the reservation for the land on which Borgward actually wanted to build a car production facility.

Whether the revived traditional brand will ever come back to Bremen is becoming more and more questionable.

The CDU citizens' faction has taken this as an opportunity to criticize the work of the government. "From the red-green announcement party that settles down with Borgward, a traditional brand in Bremen with hundreds of new jobs created, nothing remains except a hangover mood," said Jörg Kastendiek, spokesman for the economy and employment.

Foton to sell 67% stake in Borgward to ride-hailing company, consultant
Automotive News China | 2019/1/11

Chinese truckmaker Beiqi Foton Motor Co. agreed to sell a 67 percent stake in Borgward, the German SUV brand it revived four years ago, to two domestic companies -- ride-hailing provider Ucar Inc. and consulting firm Changsheng Xingye Enterprise Management Advisory Co.

The deal, priced at 3.97 billion yuan ($580 million), was approved by its board this month, Shanghai-listed Foton said.

The deal is aimed at easing the financial burden unprofitable Borgward has placed on Foton, a subsidiary of state-owned Chinese automaker BAIC Group Corp.

Borgward, once Germany's third-largest automaker, was liquidated in 1961. Foton purchased the rights to the Borgward brand in 2014.

Under Foton, Borgward has launched two gasoline-powered crossovers, the BX7 and BX5. In May, the battery-electric version of the BX7 went on sale in China. The vehicles are built at Foton's plant in suburban Beijing.

Borgward’s sales have been limited. In the first 11 months of 2018, the brand delivered 30,620 vehicles, according to the China Passenger Vehicle Alliance, a Shanghai consultancy.

The brand racked up a loss of 1.6 billion yuan in the first eight months of 2018, after losing 2.7 billion yuan in 2017.

The deal also enables Ucar to use Borgward vehicles to expand its ride-hailing fleet and to supply vehicles to its affiliate, Car Inc., a leading car rental and leasing company in China.

Ucar, established in the Chinese capital of Beijing in 2002, operates in more than 300 domestic cities. In the first three quarters of 2018, it booked 4.9 billion yuan in operating revenue and 280 million in net profit, Uncar said on its website.

Changsheng Xingye was incorporated in December in Xia’man, a coastal city in east China’s Fujian province, with registered capital of 2 billion yuan.
