I'm re-reading SME's Master Piece.

The desperate situation within BL, and I suppose British manufacturing and politics as a whole doesn't get any better the more you re-read it.

I'm staggered the whole thing rumbled on like as long as it did.

I did that this weekend, coincidentally.

It was constant hell on toast from the get-go.

And brinkmanship right up to Metrophoria.

And thereafter.

He probably had to go for reasons of his own survival. But it seemed (my footnote) to unravel again as soon as Sir Morris Bide took over and rubbed everyone up the wrong way.

I agree with all that.

Did you ever read the second Sir John Egan book?

I've not.

Probably due to a prejudice that he lived off overselling Jaguar for a number of years.

But I may well be selling him short.

The Jag he flogged might have been full of newspaper & filler, but it cannot have been easy to make it look that good, given the circumstances.

I think you are selling him short. His first autobiography was good, in the second, he names names and its all the better for it.

The men that come out good in BFTB don't necessarily come out better than the shit on his shoe.

That's prejudices for you - I'll give them a go.

Well, that was indeed an interesting read.

The bit about the near boardroom coup d'etat just as it all started to go right for once was astonishing. WTF WERE Orr-Ewing & Horrocks on?

Horrocks is the real surprise. Whats that about?

Unbelievable also that despite continuing the walk the 'line, he couldn't get Browns Lane to do a full days assembly.

Probably some sort of cunning plan to create some sort of LVMH-style luxury-bollocks group and flog off the shares to some sort of mugs at a huge profit and let them deal with the inevitable collapse.

There was a lot of that sort of hubris in the 1980s.

I balme those Pakistani tennis racquets and sports bags...

Of course, none of this should have happened - a democratic decision was taken to kick the whole thing in the head in 1980. But the shop stewards fibbed at bit.
