What do you want for one Old Benny?
A bit less straw and hay in the interior would be nice, but there you go. That's farmers for you...

Did they ever come with anything else? That was a time of decent Christian engines, not grossly undersquare heathen 2 litre in line fours as the answer to anything and everything.

And Bryan Ferry did a fine job on the styling.

2.4 petrol 5 cylinder. The 170 hp version too.
It's going to replace the van, whilst I do my trial period at the new company. I get a company van after a while, which isn't much use for going on holiday in.
Hence this.

You've seen it already?
I gave it an servicing today. I also spent three hours hoovering the hay and dog hair from it.
Next is several hours with the carpet cleaner attempting to make it hygenic.

I have just realised it has an odd wheel.

Three of the first, and one of the latter.
No idea how I didn't spot it.
It's not a bad old bus really, mid 30s mpg and comfy.
The thermostat was stuck open, so I changed that.
It needs a lower wishbone too.

Fit a genuine lower wishbone. The price will be eye watering but the aftermarket ones aren't cheap and will barely last a year.

Presumably the previous owner went looking for a ten spoke Volvo alloy after clattering a pothole and ended up with that one no?

Sidewalls for Seamaster there as an aside.

I reckon so. They were only fitted to this model, in this weird spec for 4 years. Everyone seemed to go for MASSIV RIMZ Y0! upgrade, so finding even a single one is not happening. I bought a set of four 6 spoke Seamaster spec ones instead.

Obscure wheels are a faff. I had to replace a buckled wheel on my old 540 which revealed the car had been ordered with non-standard wheels that were only an option for about 2 years

A new one was eye wateringly expensive so I found a set in Shirley. I collected my eBay purchase to find they were in fact cheap replicas, and then interrupted some sort of drug deal outside a Shell forecourt trying to make good my escape from the West Midlands.

Iíve never been convinced Bangernomics saves anyone any money.

A question you should be directing to manufacturers who specify daft low profile tyres on cars for which they are entirely unsuited.

Seaspacker is RITE. People donít want rubber band tyres but manufactures tell them that they do by fitting the top end models with ever decreasing sidewall profiles. Itís bonkers.

Itís just looks. Generally speaking more folk throwing wedge at a car are how it looks (to themselves and others) than the ride.

You can't see it when you're driving. But you can fucking feel it.

I genuinely think the result of the fashion for SUVs, combined with the daft business of oversized wheels with undersized tyres, has conditioned car buyers to accept ride quality that would have embarrassed most family cars of a generation ago.

My X-Lax is now fitted with a new set of alloys after finding hairline cracks in two of the old wheels. Itís a big problem on them as many of the OE alloys can easily warp through kerbing (18Ē Proteus are especially susceptible) or developing stress cracks (Aruba wheels seem to pretty bad at this).
I could have gone for 18Ē wheels but the ride would be made worse and it had a nearly new set of 17Ē Pirelli tyres already fitted so Iíve stuck with 17Ē wheels.

But they donít care. They want people to covet their goods not be envious of their healthier lower-back.

The real win is to find the right combo of wheel size and tyre depth. B** and VAG have tended to accept that the 18Ē rims fitted to the S3/M140I offer this, Iím inclined to agree as they still fill the arches enough.

Thereís also the argument that wheels that are too small and sidewalls too deep can actually make handling choppy and dangerous at speed. Although economy-conscious or penny pinching drivers wonít experience this whilst driving so sedately.

15Ē wheels will hit the brake callipers.
The unfortunate price one pays for owning a car with decent performance, it needs brakes man enough to stop it at nearly twice the legal limit.

Not something you would ever need of course.
