In which case spend the extra to get a 997 gen 2 with the PDK 'box. Or find a manual.

Theyíre a very underwhelming car, are 996s. Iím yet to drive one that Iíve really enjoyed.

I think the biggest disappointment with them is they always feel really tired, like some old, overweight malcontent has tried to live out his dreams in them. And failed.

Unless youíre going to get something thatís special, like Otter did, the squashed beetle makes little sense in reality. Itís difficult not to look an absolute tragic-case in them.

I thought you hated Autos, Dumbfire? Why would you spend what feels like years raging against self-shifters as ruining the fun of driving then buy an automatic Porsche?

Why would you be looking at any of them when you could get a fantastic XK for a fraction of that money.

I've always been curious about the 996, given how cheap they are these days. Mind you, all the affordable 911s seem to have the wrong box, or the wrong roof, or are wrong hand drive.

In some realities they make loads of sense. They're great to drive, you can use them every day, and if you've got small kids they'll fit in the back seats. Not an option with an R8 or F-type.

Youíre missing the twat factor. Iíd also argue the Ďgreat to driveí point. Yes, on a track or a nice Sunday afternoon. No everyday. Loud, heavy, not particularly comfortable.

The road noise in mine is louder than I'd like. Otherwise, it's perfectly calm and comfortable in everyday use. The seats are terrific. And what sort of softy finds any watercooled 911 "heavy" (apart from Sward, no doubt)?

The brakes are heavy, the clutches likewise. The gearbox doesnít snuck in and out as youíd want in everyday driving. Of course it feels positive when youíre barrelling along changing in the passive-aggressive way that spirited driving inevitably encourages, but itís just not good for running about.

Itís not fit for that purpose really.

I don't know if it's the third glass of cheap Tempranillo or the heat stroke from walking about all day trying to take photos of Daihatsu Moves on your holiday but you're talking total bollocks here Mary.

Negative. I honestly feel that way. I suppose the opinion isnít tainted by needing to justify the level of cheddar Iíve thrown at the car.

I've driven a lot of 911s. I commuted in a 997 GT3 RS with no stereo or air con for a week and still loved it. Some people don't like 911s, personally I do. So eventually I bought one. It makes me smile.

I would suggest driving a Lotus Europa (series 2 if possible), then see if you still think that the clutch etc is heavy. The couple of 911s that I have driven were nowhere near as heavy as my old Europa was.

Yes but a GT3 RS is a special car, something different and comes with the subconscious knowledge that youíre driving an elite car. There are much nicer ways to commute than in a 911. Only a stones-faced liarceould suggest otherwise.

You wouldnít throw a 6 figure sum at a 911 to commute in and expect to enjoy it every day. No cunt would.

I find the 996s drive just as boringly competent as all the other German cars, unless you're trying to kill them. Then they rather sharpen up a bit and are very good. Trouble is, if da Babylon spot you doing that...

The Japies feel a lot more 'alive' at more licence-preserving rates. And the controls are more ergonomically arranged & weighted. Mind you, the 986s et seq. are way better than the older torture chambers were in that regard.

You're embarrassing yourself now, Mary. I've just done two weeks in the new 992 and it's completely useable for all manner of mundane tasks, as indeed the 991 and 997 Carreras were before it. Try driving one of these cars every day, as I've done for two years, rather than manoeuvring them across the yard to the bloke who vacuums the carpets and then carrying on like you know what the fuck you're on about.

Being thrown the keys by a simpering PR man who begs you to say something nice about it and youíll get another one, is hardly an unbiased view. Youíre just a rung up the ladder from fucking Swiss. (Obvioudlybim not talking about the one youíve bought thatís not being used as itís laid-up).

Youíll note I said the 996, the 997 is much more useable in my opinion.
