Iím Swarding XC90s gotta be the full fat 2.9 for tow capacity reasons. Anything I should be looking out for?

Buy the worst you can, ideally at a service station car park.

Also, it's vital - absolutely VITAL - with these to make sure the service history is MISSING.

Isn't there a V8 version too?

The 5-Cyl is rather thirsty so presumably the 2.9 is too? On that basis V8 FTW.

2.9 has a GM 4 speed transmission that detonates without warning. Repairs cost about £1500 but don't last as the gearbox was underspecified for the engine's torque. Avoid.

The later 3.2 has a 6 speed Aisin and is bombproof. Good luck finding one in budget. Especially as I'm currently swarding the exact same model.

Early D5 has a simpler engine, but the auto needs regular servicing to remain fault free. Later D5 has more emission control and can have issue with the swirl flap linkage falling off - often unnoticed. Can be easily fixed with a bodge. Later auto is Aisin 6 speed and is reliable. The manual is fucking awful and eats clutches.

XC90 general.:

Check angle drive to rear haldex unit by trying to rotate the prop under the car when parked. If it turns, the splined collar to the angle drive is sheared and can lead to angle drive and transmission failure.

Knocks over bumps are normal TADT,S. But the weight of the car does make it eat inner and outer track rod joints, steering pumps and if these aren't kept in check the rack can go. Stinky brown oil in the PAS reservoir is bad news.

Don't accept any error messages on the dash display.

Check for corrosion above the spare wheel.

Don't forget that it is not a proper 4x4, just a jacked V70 and you will be happy with its abilities.

Now, we all know that Giles talks a lot of shit so I would ignore all of this and simply search for an XC90 that has different sizes and brands of tyre on each wheel. And two ignition keys for some reason.

It seems I have been somewhat misinformed about the towing capacity of the XC90 so thatís out of the window. I need summat thatíll lug 3.5 ton about.

Has anyone bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee from a wog in a Service Station carpark at all?
